First, you must always speak slowly enough to pronouce each syllable correctly with the correct stress. Also, be sure to pronounce the correct vowel sound as best as you can
But the one habit that really sharpens your pronunciation is to always complete the syllable; that is, pronounce the last sound in each syllable. If the last sound is a consonant, it has an even bigger impact!
Pronounce the Final Consonant!
If the last sound is a consonant, it is called a final consonant (it’s in the final position of the syllable!) You add exceptional clarity if you pronounce the final consonant in each syllable!
Note: not all syllables end in a consonant, but if there is a consonant in the final position, be sure to pronounce it! You will be glad you did! 😀
Let’s look at some examples of what happens when you don’t pronounce the final consonant!
“I work in a lab” might sound like “I wor i a la.”
“He can compare both items” might sound like “He ca copare bos iten.”
“The function needs to finish” might sound line “Za fushu nee to finis.”
“There is no light at night” might sound like “Theah i no li ah ni.”
“Continue the presentation” might sound like “Cotiuu ze presetation.”
“He can share some insights” might sound like “He ca sha so insi.”
“She can check volume” might sound like “She cu che voyu.”
Even native English speakers would produce English that is more understandable if they would pronounce final consonants CLEARLY!
